"Am I just the trial at the end of your wilderness?"

Evergreen - the enthralling new play by Krista Marushy

During the late shift at this rural diner, an inquisitive customer divines information far too close to home for the man behind the counter. Two strangers wrestle with coincidences that urge them to choose between the familiarity of their own isolation or the risk of being loved.

An intimate drama, somewhere between romance and mystery.
The Saskatchewan premiere, produced by Burnt Thicket Theatre.

Featuring Tim Bratton*, Andrea Folster, and Paige Francoeur

What audiences are saying:

“Wonderful! We appreciated the depth, the honest writing. I felt seen… I loved how playful it was; a great knife-edge of longing and withdrawing and playing and engaging. The ending was perfect. Thanks for exploring disenfranchised loss, love, truth and choice. We spent an hour chatting afterwards, and I am grateful to have it in my heart to continue to mull over.” –Chantal Marsolais

“We loved Krista Marushy's play EVERGREEN! This story reminds us of the healing that risking honesty affords us.” –Darryl Dozlaw

More about Evergreen and the performers

Director Stephen Waldschmidt says, "This thrilling play explores what it takes to hope for something better than what we fear, and to move from loneliness toward being truly known. Evergreen speaks profoundly to the uncertainties and disconnection created by the pandemic."

Playwright Krista Marushy, who wrote Middle Ground for our Tied In Knots audio series, won Fire Exit Theatre's 2018 Scripts On Fire competition with Evergreen. Marushy says, "This man in his 40s and this woman in her 20s are both wrestling with things they can’t do on their own, and things they have to wait for." Assistant director Johanna Arnott (who recently directed our We Treaty People audio play You Said We’d Be Together Forever) adds, "It's a story about the joy of opening your heart after it's been broken.”

Paige Francoeur is playing Angela, the inquisitive customer, who also appeared in our online performance of Delft Blue, and more recently, in Long Day’s Journey Into Night (Theatre Naught) and The Love Interest (Theatre Howl). Tim Bratton is playing Frank, the diner's host; Tim has received multiple SATAward leading performance nominations (including My Little Plastic Jesus) and appeared recently in Long Day’s Journey Into Night and Cymbeline (Shakespeare On the Saskatchewan). Andrea Folster is playing Marian, the owner of this mystical cafe, and appeared recently in Christmas Presence, You Said We’d Be Together Forever, along with Two Indians (Gordon Tootoosis Nīkānīwin Theatre).
